Kitten’s Joy – Taxable Deduction, by Prized
A well balanced Graded stakes winning son of the phenomenal North American turf sire Kitten’s Joy, North America’s Leading General Sire of 2013 and Leading Turf Sire every year 2013-2016. Suntracer descends from mares bred by such illustrious stables as Bieber-Jacobs, Greentree Stud, North Ridge Farm and Meadowbrook Farms. Out of the multiple stakes-winning Prized mare Taxable Deduction who won stakes on the turf from one mile to 1 1/8 miles over three years of racing, Suntracer’s style of running mirrors that of Kitten Joy, displaying tremendous acceleration in the stretch and it earned him over $800,000.
A May foal bred and raced by the highly successful Team Block of Illinois and trained by Chris Block, Suntracer ran four times late in his 2-year-old year, winning a maiden special weight at the Fair Grounds and finishing third in allowance company. At three, he made nine starts from February through November, winning in allowance company at Gulfstream and Keeneland before taking on stakes competition. Three times second including the Grade 2 American Derby and Grade 3 Hawthorne Derby, the late closer won the Woodchopper Stakes at the Fair Grounds in November. Trailing the field after six furlongs, Suntracer switched out for clear sailing at the top of the long Fair Grounds stretch, “inhaling his foes with a jaw-dropping turn of foot to win clear and handily.”
In his first start at 4, Suntracer finished fourth in the Col. E.R. Bradley H.-G3 despite suffering a scratched cornea from debris during the race and stepping on screw. Fitted with an eye protecting cup, Block felt Suntracer’s confidence was shaken, but by mid-year Block was quoted “I see some confidence back in (Suntracer) in the morning.” Finishing second in the Black Tie Affair and third in the Stars and Stripes S.-G3 at Arlington, Suntracer would go on to win the Illinois Owners Stakes at Arlington (defeating Mr. Mischief) and Hawthorne’s Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap over Nikki’s Sandcastle, Tazz, Hotep, etc.
Making seven starts in the last eight months of his 5-year-old season, Suntracer finished on the board six times. He raced with many of the best that season including The Pizza Man, Dark Cove and Ioya Bigtime. Eight more starts at 6, over nine months with the tenacity that had become distinctly Suntracer, he won the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Turf S. after four on the board performances in graded stakes at four different tracks. In the 1 1/2 miles over Kentucky Downs’ undulating turf course, Suntracer “was all heart, coming from last on the sweeping final turn while closing eight paths wide in the stretch to strike the front.” Suntracer’s final start, the Grade I Pattison Canadian International S. at Woodbine where he rallied belatedly to finish fifth. It was soon after discovered Suntracer was suffering from pneumonia and again his will and heart would pull him through.
Suntracer entered stud in 2016 at Prestige Stallions, his first foals will arrive in 2017.
