A.P. Indy – Well Chosen, by Deputy Minister
An iron horse, Telling was never off the board in his first eight starts, he competed from ages three to seven, and was a winner on dirt and turf. He won or placed in graded stakes events at Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Arlington Park and Saratoga and is a two-time winner of the prestigious Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (G1) for owners Alex and JoAnn Lieblong. This tough and classy campaigner finished on the board in an incredible 14 races, eight of them stakes races and retired sound with earnings of $848,409.
By Horse of the Year Champion and sire of sires A.P. Indy, Telling is produced from the Grade 1-winning mare Well Chosen, an earner of more than $500,000 for Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier. Well Chosen won the Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland, and is by leading broodmare sire Deputy Minister, from a family rich in black-type. Well Chosen produced three black-type horses from three foals to race; Telling’s second dam, Chosen Lady, is a sister to Academy Award. She sold for $1,850,000 and is a producer of four stakes horses; and Telling’s third dam is a sister to sire Rare Performer.
Telling, who attracted a strong book of mares in 2012 despite his arrival to stud late in the season, looks every bit the part of a future leading sire. His highly anticipated first foals arrived in 2013. His first crop now three include winners Kisskiss Telltell, Peggy N Judy, Slapjack and Telling Tony. With 58% starters and 36% winners from starters in his first crop, Telling’s second and larger crop are two-year-olds of 2016.
NICKING ANALYSIS by Calvin Carter
A.P. Indy, the sire of Telling, has been very successful when mated with mares from the Ancestral Herds of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector and several offspring of A.P. Indy that are proven, first-rate sires are bred on a nick with the Mr. Prospector Ancestral Herd: Malibu Moon, Pulpit, Mineshaft, Bernardini and Tapit. Telling was a durable, prolific racehorse who can pass on that toughness to his offspring and he, too, should have similar success when bred to mares from the Ancestral Herds of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector.
In addition to mares from the Ancestral Herds of Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector, Telling should also be successful when bred to mares from the Ancestral Herds of Princequillo or Ribot who are descendants of the St. Simon Ancestral Herd. In the five-generation pedigree of Telling there are several influences of the Princequillo Ancestral Herd found in the mares My Charmer, Weekend Surprise and Somethingroyal. My Charmer was the dam of Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, Weekend surprise is the dam of A.P. Indy and Somethingroyal is the dam of Triple Crown winner Secretariat.
Overall, Telling is an attractive, exciting breeding prospect who should have much success when bred to mares from the Ancestral Herds of Northern Dancer, Mr. Prospector, Princequillo and Ribot as well as with mares from the Ancestral Herds of Royal Charger and Damascus.
